What is facial lymphatic massage and how it benefits the skin

The technique involves stimulating the lymphatic system, which acts as a “waste disposal” system for toxins and bodily residues. It consists of lymph (fluid) and lymph nodes, which function as filters, monitor lymph flow, and produce cells and antibodies to fight infections. The human body contains more than 600 lymph nodes, many of them located in the neck, groin, and armpits.

Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system is not pumped by the heart. This means that, at times, there may be a fluid build-up in its vessels, which can be minimized with a few minutes of massage. Thus, the article highlights that massaging, especially areas where lymph nodes are located, can increase lymphatic drainage, reduce fluid retention, and stimulate circulation.

“Theoretically, by eliminating excess fluids and toxins, lymphatic massage can lead to a reduction in swelling and inflammation [in the body],” says dermatologist Onyeka Obioha-Lolagne. According to the expert, facial lymphatic massage is especially beneficial for those who suffer from facial swelling and inflammation, particularly around the eyes.

How to perform the massage at home

To perform facial lymphatic massage on yourself, you can use tools like a jade roller, a gua sha stone, a dry brush, or your own fingers. It’s important to use an oil or facial moisturizer to aid in skin gliding.

To massage the eye area, invest in a product specific to the area and follow three simple steps: warm, apply, and drain. After warming the product in your hands, use the tips of your ring fingers to gently press the product into your skin, moving from the inner corner of the eyes to the outer.

You can use the same technique to massage the entire face, but with a product specific to the area. A good tip is to opt for a serum and combine your skincare routine with facial lymphatic massage.

After warming the serum, apply it with both hands by slowly pressing it into the skin, but with firm fingers. Move your hands from the forehead to the neck in the direction of lymphatic flow, as Onyeka suggests. “Consistent pressure is what helps move the lymph accumulation from the center of the face towards the lymph nodes, where it will be filtered and pushed through the lymphatic network,” explains the dermatologist.
