Hair medical expert Alexandra Lopes from the Les Peaux clinic in Rio de Janeiro explains that the period before and during menopause – typically between 45 and 55 years – is characterized by a decrease in the estrogen hormone, resulting in changes in hair composition.
Hair Changes During Menopause
According to her, the changes begin at the roots, where dryness of the scalp occurs. Consequently, hair also starts to become drier, coarser, and more brittle. All these factors are usually associated with the appearance of gray hair.
“Hair doesn’t fall out in women during menopause, it just becomes thinner due to hormonal changes. We call this phenomenon miniaturization. Over time, the growth cycle shortens, resulting in finer hair. Hence, these women notice they have less hair than before,” comments the doctor, pointing out the existence of medications and treatments that can alleviate this condition.
To maintain healthy hair after 50, some basic care is necessary, as listed by the expert.
Four Tips for Hair Care After 50
1 – Attention to Hair Coloring
“50% of women at 50 years old will have 50% gray hair. As the scalp of these women is dry, there’s a higher risk of irritation. The ideal is to use hypoallergenic colors without ammonia and thoroughly hydrate the hair,” advises the expert.
2 – Hair Sun Protection
To avoid further consequences and restore the hair, it might be worthwhile to invest in a hair care plan focusing on hydration. The doctor also recommends paying attention to hair exposure to sunlight and avoiding the use of heat sources like a hairdryer, flat iron, or curling iron, as the hair becomes more exposed due to the loss of natural lubrication. Therefore, the use of products with sun protection and heat protection is advised.
3 – Addition of Hair Vitamins
In this age group, it may be necessary to supplement certain nutrients such as organic silicon, cysteine, biotin, and others. However, before using any hair vitamins or similar, it’s recommended to undergo the appropriate laboratory tests to identify individual deficiencies and then start supplementation under medical guidance.
4 – Homemade Recipe for Hair Hydration
Finally, for those struggling with dry scalp, the expert suggests a simple recipe that can be made at home by mixing the following ingredients: 1 drop of lavender essential oil; 1 drop of chamomile essential oil; 1 drop of ylang-ylang essential oil; 1 tablespoon of avocado oil; 2 tablespoons of coconut oil.
“Let it sit on the scalp and hair for 2 hours and rinse with your favorite shampoo,” advises Alexandra.
